How to Prepare for Your Professional Headshot Session
A professional headshot is more than just a nice photo of your face.
It is often the first impression people have of you online. It can show up on your website, LinkedIn profile, business card, speaker bio, email signature, social media, marketing materials, and anywhere people are deciding whether they want to work with you.
That is why preparing for your headshot session matters.
The good news is, you do not need to stress or overthink every detail. A little planning can help you feel confident, polished, and ready for a session that actually feels like you.
Think About Where You Will Use Your Images
Before your session, take a few minutes to think about how you plan to use your headshots.
Do you need a clean professional image for LinkedIn? A warm and approachable image for your website? Something polished for marketing materials? A few options for social media?
Knowing where your photos will be used helps us plan the right style, background, wardrobe, and expression.
A headshot for a corporate profile may feel different from a branding image for a coach, artist, realtor, photographer, speaker, or small business owner. Your images should support the way you want to be seen.
Choose Clothing That Makes You Feel Confident
What you wear can make a big difference in how you feel during your session.
Choose clothing that fits well, flatters your shape, and feels aligned with your personality and profession. You do not need to wear something overly formal unless that fits your brand.
Solid colors usually photograph beautifully. Neutrals like black, white, cream, gray, and navy are timeless, while jewel tones can add richness and personality.
Try to avoid clothing with tiny busy patterns, large logos, or anything that distracts from your face.
Most importantly, choose something that makes you feel like the polished version of yourself.
Bring a Few Options
Even if your session is short, it is helpful to bring a few wardrobe choices.
You may want one classic professional look and one slightly more relaxed or modern option. A blazer, cardigan, jacket, or layered piece can also help create variety quickly.
If you are unsure what will photograph best, bring options. I can help you choose what works best on camera.
You do not have to figure it all out by yourself.
Pay Attention to Grooming Details
Small details can make your final images feel more polished.
Before your session, check your clothing for wrinkles, lint, missing buttons, or anything that needs attention. If you color your hair, consider whether you want to touch up your roots ahead of time. If you wear nail polish, choose something clean and simple, especially if your hands may show in any of the images.
For makeup, you can keep it natural or go a little more polished than your everyday look. The camera can soften makeup, so a little definition around the eyes, brows, and lips can be helpful.
Professional hair and makeup can also be added if you want to feel extra prepared and taken care of.

Get Rest and Hydrate
This sounds simple, but it helps.
Try to get a good night’s sleep before your session and drink plenty of water. Avoid trying a brand-new skincare treatment, facial, self-tanner, or dramatic haircut right before your photos unless you already know and love the result.
The goal is to feel fresh, comfortable, and like yourself.
Practice, But Don’t Over-Practice
It is completely normal to feel a little nervous before a headshot session.
You can look in the mirror and notice which smile feels natural, which side you prefer, or how you like your hair to fall. But you do not need to practice every pose.
That is my job.
I will guide you through posture, angles, expressions, and what to do with your hands. You will not be left standing there wondering what to do.
Know the Feeling You Want to Create
A great headshot should communicate something about you.
Do you want to look warm and approachable? Confident and powerful? Calm and trustworthy? Creative and energetic? Friendly and professional?
You do not have to choose only one. We can create a few different expressions and moods so you have options.
The best headshots feel polished, but still genuine.

Don’t Wait Until You “Need” One Tomorrow
Many people wait until they urgently need a headshot before booking a session.
But updated headshots are something every professional should have ready. If you are asked to submit a bio, appear on a website, update your LinkedIn, promote an event, launch a business, or refresh your marketing, you will be glad you already have images you love.
A current headshot helps you look prepared, professional, and confident.
Your Headshot Should Look Like You Now
If your current headshot is several years old, heavily filtered, cropped from a group photo, or no longer matches the way you look or present yourself, it may be time for an update.
Your headshot should reflect who you are today.
Not an outdated version. Not a rushed phone photo. Not an image you are using only because it is “good enough.”
You deserve a professional image that helps people recognize you, trust you, and feel confident reaching out.
