What to Wear for a Branding or Headshot Session
Your branding photos or professional headshots are often the first impression people have of you.
Before they read your bio, visit your website, book a consultation, or send an inquiry, they see your face. They notice your expression, your confidence, your style, and the feeling your image gives them.
That is why what you wear matters.
The good news? You do not need to overthink it. You do not need a completely new wardrobe. You simply need clothing that helps you look polished, confident, approachable, and aligned with the way you want to be seen.
Start With the Message You Want to Send
Before choosing outfits, think about how you want people to feel when they see your images.
Do you want to look warm and approachable? Powerful and polished? Creative and modern? Calm and trustworthy? Elegant and refined?
Your clothing should support that message.
A real estate agent, coach, attorney, artist, salon owner, speaker, and small business owner may all need branding images, but they may not all want the same look. Your wardrobe should reflect your personality, your work, and the clients you want to attract.

Choose Outfits That Fit Well
Fit is one of the most important parts of looking polished on camera.
Clothing does not have to be expensive to photograph well, but it does need to fit properly. Pieces that are too tight can make you feel uncomfortable, and pieces that are too loose can hide your shape or look messy in photos.
Look for clothing that skims your body, gives you structure, and lets you move naturally.
Blazers, tailored tops, fitted sweaters, wrap dresses, structured jackets, and clean necklines usually photograph beautifully.
Bring a Variety of Looks
For a branding or headshot session, I usually recommend bringing a few different outfit options so we can create variety.
You may want:
One polished professional look
One more relaxed or approachable look
One outfit that feels a little more elevated or personal
This gives you images you can use in different places: your website, social media, email signature, LinkedIn, speaker bio, marketing materials, and online profiles.

Solid Colors Are Usually Your Friend
Solid colors tend to photograph beautifully because they keep the attention on your face.
Neutrals like black, white, cream, gray, navy, and taupe are timeless. Jewel tones like emerald, burgundy, sapphire, plum, and deep teal can also be gorgeous on camera.
If you love color, bring it. The key is choosing colors that flatter your skin tone and support your brand.
Try to avoid tiny busy patterns, neon colors, or anything with large logos unless it is intentionally part of your brand.
Think About Necklines and Layers
Necklines can make a big difference in how your final images feel.
V-necks, scoop necks, boat necks, collared shirts, and structured jackets can all work well depending on your style and body shape. Layers are also wonderful because they create dimension and give us more variety without a complete outfit change.
A blazer, cardigan, denim jacket, leather jacket, or beautiful wrap can quickly shift the feeling of your images.
Don’t Forget Accessories
Accessories can help bring personality into your images.
Simple earrings, a necklace, a watch, a scarf, or a statement piece can add polish without overwhelming the photo.
The goal is to enhance your look, not distract from your face. If you are unsure, bring options and we can decide together.

Dress Like the Version of You Your Client Is Excited to Hire
This is one of my favorite ways to think about branding photos.
You do not have to dress like someone else. You do not have to look stiff or overly corporate unless that truly fits your brand.
But you do want to dress like the version of you who is confident, capable, and ready to be seen.
Your images should help your ideal client feel, “Yes, this is someone I trust.”
Bring More Than You Think You Need
If you are not sure what to wear, bring extra options.
It is always better to have choices. Bring the blouse you love, the blazer you are considering, the dress you are unsure about, and the accessories you might want to try.
Part of my job is helping you decide what will photograph best.
You do not have to figure it all out alone.
Your Photos Should Still Feel Like You
The best branding and headshot images are polished, but still real.
You should look like yourself on your best day. Confident, professional, warm, and current.
Not overly posed. Not overly filtered. Not like you are trying to fit into someone else’s idea of what professional should look like.
Your photos should feel like an elevated version of you.
