Senior Portraits: When Should You Book Your Session?
Senior year has a way of sneaking up on families.
One minute you are buying school supplies and driving to practices, and the next you are talking about graduation announcements, yearbook deadlines, open houses, college applications, and all the "lasts" that come with senior year.
That is why booking senior portraits early is so helpful.
Senior portraits are more than a school requirement. They are a celebration of who your senior is right now, at the edge of something new. This season deserves to be photographed with care, personality, and enough time to make the experience feel fun instead of rushed.
The Best Time to Book Senior Portraits
The best time to book senior portraits is usually the spring or summer before senior year, or early fall once senior year begins.
If your senior wants outdoor portraits with warm weather, greenery, flowers, or golden evening light, summer is a beautiful option. If they love cozy layers, fall color, and a little more texture in the background, early fall can be perfect.
The most important thing is to book before the calendar gets crowded.
Between sports, jobs, school events, homecoming, college visits, and yearbook deadlines, senior year can fill up quickly.

Do Not Wait for the Yearbook Deadline
Many schools have specific deadlines for submitting senior photos to the yearbook.
Those deadlines can arrive earlier than parents expect. If you wait until the deadline is close, you may feel rushed choosing outfits, scheduling the session, selecting the final image, and getting everything submitted on time.
Booking earlier gives you more breathing room.
It also gives your senior more options, especially if weather becomes an issue or you want a specific season or location.
Summer Senior Sessions
Summer is one of the most popular times for senior portraits, and for good reason.
Schedules are often more flexible, the evenings are longer, and outdoor locations are beautiful. Seniors can choose outfits without worrying about school-day stress, and families can check portraits off the list before the busy school year begins.
Summer sessions are wonderful for seniors who want:
- Warm, glowing light
- Greenery or flowers
- Relaxed outfits
- More scheduling flexibility
- Photos finished before school starts
If your senior has a packed fall schedule, summer may be the best choice.

Fall Senior Sessions
Fall senior portraits are beautiful, especially here in Michigan when the color starts to change.
Fall sessions feel rich, warm, and timeless. They work well for seniors who love sweaters, jackets, boots, deeper colors, or a more classic seasonal look.
The only challenge with fall is that it books quickly and the season is short. Weather can also be less predictable, so it is important to plan ahead.
If your senior wants fall portraits, book early so you have the best chance of getting the look and timing you want.

What About Spring of Senior Year?
Spring can be a great option for cap and gown photos, graduation announcements, or a smaller bonus session.
But I do not recommend waiting until spring for the main senior portrait session if you need images for the yearbook or want plenty of time to order products.
Spring of senior year is full of activity. Graduation, prom, senior events, final assignments, sports, open houses, and college decisions all start happening at once.
It can be a beautiful time for extra images, but it is usually not the easiest time to start from scratch.
Give Yourself Time to Plan Outfits
One of the best parts of senior portraits is showing personality.
That might mean sports uniforms, instruments, favorite outfits, college gear, hobbies, a dressy look, a casual look, or something completely unique to your senior.
When you book early, you have time to plan wardrobe without panic shopping the night before.
Your senior can try things on, think about what feels like them, and bring a few different looks for variety.
Senior Portraits Are for Parents, Too
Senior portraits are often thought of as being for the student, but they are deeply meaningful for parents, too.
This is the child you have watched grow up. The one who used to need help tying shoes, packing lunches, and remembering homework. Now they are standing at the beginning of adulthood.
These portraits become part of your family's story.
They are used for announcements, open houses, albums, wall portraits, gifts, and keepsakes. More than that, they help preserve this moment before everything changes again.
